I was puzzled by the 601 area code. 601? Where the hell is that?
Listening to the voicemail I was glad to hear that it was an Army buddy calling to tell
me that he'll be in the ATL today 9/8. Immediately I felt a little indifferent.
Stationed together near the Baltimore/ DC area, (Georgia Avenue in DC was our spot),
I had forgotten that he e-mailed me about a month ago to tell me he was coming through,
on his way home to Jackson, MS from VA. Really, I'm not the entertaining type, and especially
on short (re)-notice. But I have to put my selfish thoughts aside and have this good time tonight,
regardless if I have to be somewhere at 8am on saturday morning. He's off to Iraq soon and I can't
live with brushing him off if he weren't to come back. I've had several partners to hit that desert and
return, but it's always a new feeling when somebody tells you it's their turn.

Had a friend recently return after two years in the big ol' sand box. The military is a VERY SCARY place and even if it's just a short and somewhat unwanted visit, it's worth the time. All of our time is limited, but figure his is now even more so. The odds of a young black man living past the age of 25 has now increased.
