Ernie Barnes, legendary football player and artist, has died




Legendary pro football player and legendary artist Ernie Barnes had died. According to the LA news, Ernie Barnes passed away Monday, April 27th, 2009. Ernie Barnes was born on July 15, 1938 in Durham, North Carolina.

Ernie Barnes played for four football teams during his professional career: the Baltimore Colts, the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. and the New York Titans, which later became the Jets.

Ernie Barnes is also known for his extraordinary artwork. According to the biography on Ernie's website, In 1965, New York Jets owner Sonny Werblin recognized Barnes’ artistic potential and replaced his football salary for one season so he could devote himself “to just paint.” He retired from the game of football shortly after.

Ernie is famous for many of his works of art. In 1971 he painted the cover "The Sugar Shack" for Marvin Gaye's album entitled "I want you". He also painted the closing credits for the 70's sitcom "Good Times". He was also the offical artist for the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles. Many of Ernie's painting were sports related. Ernie Barnes connection to Kanye West
